Capturing Caribbean Car Culture
Under the glow of floodlights and the hum of anticipation, Hyperspeed and 784 streets transformed the Arnos Vale tarmac in St. Vincent into a spectacle of speed and precision as they hosted a Caribbean-wide autocross event that drew competitors from St. Lucia, Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The late hour race was held on a specially designed course which was both forgiving and dangerous with some sections having long run-offs, while other corners lead you into an oil drum. This tested the drivers’ quick reflexes while giving them the thrill of pushing the machines to their limits. What sets this event apart was not just the nocturnal setting, but the diversity of its participants. Teams from multiple countries lined up, each bringing their own style of racing and personality. The atmosphere was electric with flags waving and fans cheering for drivers of both their home country and the competition. Among the battles, one which stood out to me was the friendly rivalry between St. Lucia and St. Vincent. Both countries fielded skilled drivers who competed in each other’s countries. The Vincentians leaned on frequent practice while the St. Lucians looked to each other, practicing on the weekends and showing the first timers the ropes.

For Hyperspeed and 784 Streets, the night was more than a race. It was proof of their ability to unite competitors under one banner of sportsmanship. Despite the hiccups during set up, the comradery necessary to put on this event shined through. Their meticulous organization – from track layout to safety, ensured that the event ran seamlessly. Drivers praised the course’s design, while fans “big up” the group’s ability to create an atmosphere that felt fresh and competitive. As engines cooled and the night gave way to dawn, one thing was clear, autocross is more than a test of speed. It was a celebration of community, rivalry and passion for the sport. Thank you to Hyperspeed and 784 Streets, this event will be remembered not only for its thrilling races but also for the camaraderie that shone just as brightly as a tercel’s coolant gauge.
